Michael Johns appeared on American Idol during the audition episodes as an Australian import but word on the street is that he’s not all he’s cracked up to be. A part from being dreamy and having an amazing voice.
The story of Michael Johns stretches all the way back to 2000 when he first joined the band Film as their lead singer. Back then his name wasn’t even Michael Johns, it was Michael Lee. Since the band had previously been established Johns’ was to attempt to learn the bands old material as well as to help them produce new, and original, material.
That December Film went into the studio to record what would be their second album, called …rolling… This would be the first album with Film that Michael Johns would be a part of. It included the now infamous song Q, a song that the head of Maverick Records called, “his most favorite song of all time.”
In 2001 Maverick records offered Film (with then lead singer Johns) a record deal after they were flown to Los Angeles to perform for the label. One week later Johns left the band.
Instead Johns’ decided to assume his new name and shop himself around as a solo artist, using songs and melodies he had stolen from his previous band. He rerecorded the song Q renaming it So Alive and claiming he wrote it, when in fact the song had been written by the guitarist before he had ever even joined the band!

Stealing the old music, tweaking it and claiming it was his isn’t fair. I think we have a new Chris Daughtry on our hands. Ok, Chris didn’t quite steal a song, but one of his songs sounded so much like a song from another group that many people think he did steal it. But in this case with Johns, if he ripped off the old band and all, that’s over the top.
[…] Michael Johns 28, Los Angeles, CA auditioned in San Diego - “Light my Fire” - This guy has really got–something. I couldn’t care less if he’s a song stealer, he’s compelling. I love the raspy, mature quality of his voice. He makes the other rockers seem like boylets. He’s very comfortable performing on stage. […]
